MCGILLIGAN: Can you talk a little about collaborating on scripts with your sister Delia? The fun or unique chemistry of it? I can’t think of too many other female-sibling partnerships nowadays. It’s almost like channeling your parents!

EPHRON: I love working with Delia because she makes me laugh more than anyone I know. I started working with her on the first movie I directed—This Is My Life. I had by then deluded myself into thinking that I had been wildly helpful to the directors I’d worked with as a screenwriter, and in any case, I wanted to make sure someone was there playing that role for me when I started directing. I knew for sure, in addition, that I’d need someone to make changes and have a cold clear eye out for the script. When you start directing, you really aren’t looking out for the script—you’re elsewhere. Anyway, it turned out to be exactly what I’d hoped for, and a chance for me to spend way more time than I normally would with one of my favorite people.
